Should I Get Make-Up Done for My Family Photos?
As an Austin family photographer, I often get asked: should I get my make-up done for my family photos? The long and short of it is that there is no wrong answer! As the girl who zooms in closely on faces, though, I am going to give you the low down on my honest feelings regarding this topic!
First, you truly can’t go wrong either way. Your session is personal to YOU, which means that if you feel strongly either way, that is going to be what’s best for your family photos. I have moms who love having a face full of make-up for their images and moms who feel like the natural route is the best way for them to go. No matter what, you’re going to look stunning.
Does wearing make-up truly make a difference in the outcome of family photos? Honestly, yes, and I’ll tell you why. The camera picks up less than what you’re wearing, which means a face full of make-up in person actually translates less on the camera. Make-up also gives your face contrast and depth, two very key components of what make images pop. The deeper eyeshadow and lash line contrasting to a person’s face really makes a “wow” factor for an image. On the opposite end of the spectrum, a gorgeous, natural look in person often translates to it appearing like less make-up on camera. It really all depends on the look you’re going for, but I always recommend wearing make-up, in general. It doesn’t mean that it has to be professional, though!
At the end of the day, your images really should be true to who you are as a family. I do challenge you, however, to think of your photography session as a fun opportunity to get totally glammed up! You are wearing great outfits you might not usually wear, and getting your make-up done might be a fun treat for you to feel amazing at your session. As someone who gets really self conscious about being in front of a camera, it’s super important for me to get my make-up done so that I feel my best. That feeling translates to confidence on camera, just being with my people. I always feel like that results in better photos!
Are you on a budget? Getting your make-up done doesn’t have to be expensive. Do you have one of “those friends” who is just incredible at make-up and always does such a great job on herself? Ask her to do yours for your session! Or, book a spot at one of the make-up counters in Nordstrom or Sephora. It is a budget-friendly way to still look fantastic. I always do recommend booking a make-up artist if you can, though. There are so many fantastic options to choose from here, and my Welcome Guide gives you all the info for my favorite ones!
What do you think? Are you still asking yourself, “Should I get my make-up done for my family photos?” Are you feeling more confident in your decision?
