What to Expect During Your Austin Newborn Session | Austin Newborn Photographer

What is it like to have an in home newborn session with me? Hint: it’s laid back, in your own space, and results in a lot of snuggles. Let me walk you through what to expect during your Austin newborn session with Jessica Rockowitz Photography!

Austin Newborn Session Wardrobe

Wardrobe is often what most clients stress about the most, but with newborn sessions, it is a total breeze. We start with the postpartum mom and dress her first because since she is the one who just birthed a human, she needs to be the most comfortable! I recommend dressing for comfort and in clothes that skim the body – nothing tight and clingy. Examples would be leggings/comfortable jeans and a flowy top or tunic with or without a cardigan thrown over, or a dress that hangs loosely over the midsection and is casual enough for indoors. Once we dress mama, we choose outfits for baby, siblings if applicable, and mama’s partner. All of this is available right in my client closet!

The Best Spaces to Photograph

When I arrive at your home, I scout for the most well lit areas. I ask you ahead of time what rooms tend to get the best natural light and the tones/colors of those spaces. Why is this important? If the best room in your house for light has a bright blue wall, I’m not going to dress you in blues because you’ll blend in. We want your colors to compliment both your coloring and your home! Typically we take photos in a primary bedroom, nursery, and/or family room. The poses that I do will be determined by what rooms get the most natural light. Don’t be concerned, though, because there is always a perfect space!

Starting with Siblings

Siblings are in a transition period when baby comes home. They are getting used to their new family dynamic, to a new little human that is taking attention, and they are also in their own space. All of this is the perfect storm for siblings to act out and test boundaries, and that’s absolutely ok. We typically start with sibling photos since this is placing the most demand on the sibling, so to speak, and they are going to tire quickly. We then move onto full family photos so the sibling can then be “off the hook” for the rest of the session.

Minimal Poses, Lots of Love

In home newborn sessions are all about the organic love and connection in your own space. This means that we aren’t placing an emphasis on posed images (though we always have some!) and more on natural moments unfolding. This doesn’t mean I leave you hanging, though. I am directing the entire session and giving you prompts to do to help natural moments unfold. You can and should expect snuggling, kissing, hugging, and all the natural love and connection.

The End Result

When I leave, babies typically take a fantastic nap because they are super tired from all of the different people holding them, putting them down, picking them up, etc. You can expect a gallery delivered within one month, filled with love and connection of you and your people just being yourselves with your new growing family.
